Take your passion for a world tour

Take your passion for a world tour By Steven SandersAlthough I enjoyed teaching in the UK, I was always first out of the school gates with my passport in hand whenever the winter, Easter or summer holidays would come around. After spending two years flitting between my two passions, I decided the best approach would be to simply combine them and teach abroad. I researched available positions and accepted a teaching position in Italy. The image of the country’s famous art and cuisine made handing in my resignation easier. It’s important to understand that teaching in another country isn’t always just a smooth transition into a new job, however, it has always been these potential banana skins that fueled my desire to explore the wold. I began to see the positive aspects of uprooting.I always enjoyed fully immersing myself into new surroundings, even when on vacation, and the thought of progressing with a new language and becoming a familiar face in a foreign place was something I thrived on.Anywhere in the world, ru ral or urban, you can find ways to immerse yourself into your local community through being socially involved, and many schools are open to ESL teachers setting up extracurricular activities in something you are passionate about: sports, the arts, knitting - you name it!Committing time to learning the local language will always have its benefits, and can be another source of motivation to pry you away from expat clubs or western movies and music.Aside from this, it’s important to remember that teaching abroad is not a vacation, and the students - as well as the school - need a teacher who is enthusiastic and dedicated.Combining this desire with the advice above will see you reap the rewards that ESL teaching offers, and allow you to feel part of where you live, and not just a temporary figure dreaming about home comforts.Steven Sanders is a Placement Coordinator at  Teach Away. Sanders taught English in Italy and Bolivia.

The Organic Chemistry Tutor Isomerism Test

The Organic Chemistry Tutor Isomerism TestThe Organic Chemistry Tutor isomerism test is based on the concept of one atom of the two substances having the same atoms, their chemical composition is the same and the molecular weight being the same. The two substances can have some properties of each other or they can have no properties of either substance. The latter may be due to different molecular weights or due to different weights for the different kinds of atoms, or the latter could also be due to differing molecular weights, or lack of mass, or something else that you have not come across before. It is often assumed that a chemical like Aluminium would be absorbed by an Aluminium compound and then not allowed to escape into the atmosphere because they would be connected by a molecular bond. However, you must understand that there are several chemicals out there that share this property. In fact, a simple article in a chemistry journal can give you a good idea about these chemical compounds and their relationships. This knowledge may be very useful in understanding what is happening to your body when you are taking the Organic Chemistry isomerism test. The Organic Chemistry Tutor isomerism test will be a way to check whether you have a strong or weak molecular bond with your food. That is all it does. It is basically only meant to tell you whether you have a weak or strong bond with your food. For instance, if you did not eat your lunch and you are quite hungry, you would not have a strong bond, you would have a weak bond.As you may know, the chemical isomerism test is supposed to reveal the exact molecular formula of the chemical that has a strong or weak molecular bond with your food. When you take the test, you will have to eat the food in an attempt to discover if you have a strong or weak bond with it. If you find that you have a strong bond, you would have found the answer to the question. There are many ways to take the Organic Chemistry Tutor isomerism test. You can do it on your own or with the help of someone who is experienced. You can also do it in your laboratory, with a chemical reagent of your choice. But the most convenient way is to use the test you have bought from a supplement company. There are also two things that you need to be aware of when taking the Organic Chemistry Tutor isomerism test. First of all, you will have to go through all the steps required for passing the test and you will need to spend some time preparing for the test. The second thing that you need to be aware of is that the results of the Organic Chemistry Tutor isomerism test is not guaranteed and there is nothing in this test that will actually give you the answer to the question. So, the test is only meant to let you know whether you have a strong or weak bond with your food.

Drum Lessons for Beginners

Drum Lessons for Beginners Learn to Play the Drums ChaptersDo You Need Your Own Drum Kit to Learn to Play the Drums?Preparing for your Drum LessonsDo your feet always tap with the beats of a song? Do you groove with the rhythm whenever music is playing? If you’ve been thinking about learning to play a musical instrument, you might want to consider a percussion instrument. Some people think drums are nothing but loud, used to keep marching bands in synch. But there is so much more to playing drums than just banging a skin with sticks. So why not explore the fascinating world of percussion and learn to play the drums?learning the rudiments of drumming, wetting your feet and finding out if drum playing is really for you. However, you will need to practice at home, even as a beginner - and that means buying drums. Whether you are learning jazz drumming or practising your rock drum solo, you need the right feedback under your drumsticks to improve your drum play. And that means investing in a drum set. Here are some online drum lessons for y ou.You might get away with borrowing drums at the very beginning, but you should really buy your own drum set. Photo credit: screen-box.de on Visual HuntIf you are learning hand drumming or ethnic drum music - such as an African drum (Djembe or talking drums), conga, samba drums, or indeed anything portable, it’s more likely that your music teacher will have some that you can borrow to practice on at home. Once you reach the intermediate level, you will still need your own drum. The prices for hand drums vary greatly - bongos go for anywhere from £60 to £300, congas between £300 to £600, bodhrans average around £50.Find out how much drum lessons cost...Practising at home without a drum setBut can you practise without having a drum set at home? To a certain extent, yes. When learning to play the drums, you can take a series of buckets and cans about the right size and set them up like a drum kit. Dave Grohl from Nirvana is famous for using snare drumsticks to practice on pillow s. It is a way for a beginner drummer to practise the moves, the rhythm of switching from one drum to another. However, what it can’t teach you is proper stick control. The sound of the drums and cymbals will vary depending on where you hit (rim or skin), how hard you hit and what type of stick you use - regular drumsticks, padded mallets or brushes. You need to learn the difference in sound between your bass, snare and toms. And that is only possible with actual, physical drums. Also, it’s pretty difficult to simulate a pedal. Even if you can use an old sewing machine pedal to practise your timing, you won’t be getting the physical and auditory feedback you need to improve your bass drum playing.Electronic drums and practise pads are easier on the neighbours, but unless you want to specialise in electronic drums, an acoustic set is best. Photo on VisualHunt.comBeing nice to your neighboursDo you live in a flat with thin walls and floors? Nosy neighbours, who complain at the lea st little cough? It’s likely your drum teacher will nag you to use a practise pad in any case.A practice pad is just a little rubber pad that gives acoustic feedback when struck. In short, it’s a drum without the resonance body. It’s not as loud and it is actually very sensitive, so you actually have to be more accurate on a practice pad. However, there are a number of disadvantages.ProsConsIt’s portable. With only one pad, you can’t practice complex drum fills for your drum solo. It’s quiet compared with a physical drum. You can’t practice your kick drum. Its surface is made to imitate that of a snare drum.It only imitates snares and doesn’t give the feel of toms. It’s wonderful for practising rudiments such as a simple drum beat, drum rolls or a paradiddle. It doesn’t have rims. It’s very sensitive, forcing you to be accurate. While quite sensitive, you won’t be learning to listen to your drums - which have more reverb and overtones. It’s a good way to practice sho wmanship drumming. You can’t practice your cymbal work.If you can’t have an acoustic drum set at home when learning drums another option is to go for an electronic drum set. It will have the full set of drums set up like a traditional drum kit. The pads are designed to feel like a traditional drumhead when you hit them. You can play them with headphones and get a sound nearer to real drums. However, though the sound is close, it isn’t exactly the same. On the upside, you can program a whole array of interesting sounds (canon or foghorn, anyone?).Preparing for your Drum LessonsWhen learning how to play the drums, you will find that it’s not just about drum fills and jazz improvisation. You will need to know how to care for your instrument and how to read musical notation.Drum tuningDo you come back from your drumming lessons wondering why your snare and toms sound different from those used by Carmine Appice, John Blackwell or Buddy Rich? It might have to do with how your drums are tuned. Some drums are tuned to a certain pitch and left at that. Other drums are tunable during play (like tabors or African talking drums). In the latter case, your drum instructor will definitely teach you how to vary the pitch while playing. In the former, a good educator will demonstrate how tuning the top and bottom heads will affect the sound of your drums. At the latest when you need to change the drum head, you will need to learn to tune your drums.Pearl Drums has a handy set of instructions for tuning the common drums of a drum set. Exactly what pitch you tune them to and what drum heads you choose will depend on the musical style you are playing - rock, jazz, afro-cuban, Latin or Big Band, and of course your own personal preferences.Do you know how to find your ideal drum tutor?Learning to Read Drum NotationIf you want to progress beyond the beginner exercises set by your drum teacher, you will need to learn how to read drum notation. If you can already read music, it can be both helpful and a hindrance. In normal musical notation, the placement of the notes on the staff give you the note played and the type of note (eighth note, quarter note…) will give you the rhythm. With drum notation, it’s a little different. It doesn’t help that there is no truly standardised notation, though there are some that are more common than others. The one used in Norman Weinberg’s Guide to Standardized Drumset Notation is the most commonly used out there, but you might find yourself confronted with a completely different notation once you start getting gigs. The basic premise remains the same:The type of percussion instrument is indicated by the shape of the note. Drums are usually normal black notes, cymbals, whether hi-hats or crash are an “x”, additional percussion instruments can be a triangle or cross. Which specific instrument is meant is indicated by its place on the stave. For example, the kick drum is generally on the bottom space of the staff; if d ouble bass drums are used, the second bass will be on the lowest bar. The snare is on the “la” or “A” space (if it were in treble clef). Drum sheet music publishers always include a legend at the beginning of the piece.Additional symbols can indicate ghost notes, rolls (eighth or sixteenth note or triplets), flams, drags or ruffs.Rhythm is indicated as in traditional music notation with the types of note (full, quarter, eighth etc.) Note that every drum notation is four beats to the bar unless otherwise indicated (a rare and challenging event).Drum notation looks like normal musical notation but works on slightly diffreent premise. Photo credit: chi-ryu on Visualhunt.comAnother way of writing down drum beats and rhythms is using a drum tabulation, or drum tabs.A drum tab will have a line for each of the instruments, and each strike is indicated with an o for drums or an x for cymbals. A line “-” indicates that the instrument is silent. Drag, flam, ghost notes etc. each h ave a specific letter assigned to them.To advance in your craft, you will need to learn to read both drum music notation and drum tabs. A metronome is a useful tool to help you with that.Learning how to play drums can appear daunting at first, but as you progress in your lessons you will soon get into the groove and improvise your own drum fills. And why not try a personal instructor like one of Superprof’s many drum tutors near you?Ready, steady, go! It's time to learn how to play the drums!

Ask an Admissions Expert Densil R. R. Porteous II

Ask an Admissions Expert Densil R. R. Porteous II Varsity Tutors brings you insider tips and advice straight from nationally recognized admissions experts. Densil R. R. Porteous II is currently the Director of Admissions at Columbus College of Art Design. He has served in leadership roles in admissions at Stanford Universityand his alma mater, Kenyon College. Densil has also taught at the high school and post-secondary levels when he served as Director of College Counseling at the Drew School in San Francisco and College Counseling Certificate Instructor at University of California, San Diego. VT: How far ahead of time should a student begin working on his or her college application? Densil: Arent students always working on their college application? Not to add to the unneeded stress of an already complicated process, but we know that everything a student does will somehow shape that ever generic college application. However, when it comes down to an application for a specific college I think a student can start a month or two into their senior year. With the prevalence of the Common Application and the Universal Application we now know that the root of many applications are the samethis is an effort by colleges and universities to take away a little stress from this process for students. Each school may have a supplement that a student should spend solid time on reflecting on the school specific questions and considering the answers that best speak to that schools community. Identify a schools application deadline, give yourself a deadline about a week before that deadline and then map back one month from that point. This may allow a student to create a large ca lendar of all the moving pieces needed to complete several applications at different schools. VT: What are the best ways to go about selecting a terrific essay topic? Densil: Ive been working in admissions for roughly eleven years as a professional and four years on top of that as a para-professional. I can say for certain there is no such thing as a terrific essay topic. There is such a thing as a well-crafted essayregardless of topic. The end game from an admissions essay is the admissions officer getting a deeper understanding of the applicantand hopefully how that applicant will engage as a part of that schools community. So, it is not about the topic, but it is about how you present the topic, the notion of how that topic relates to the essence of you, the applicant, and potentially how you see all of that affecting who you are and aim to become. VT: Are there any essay topics you get tired of seeing or would warn students to stay away from? Densil: The other day I estimated that I have read right about 10,000 essays during my time as an admissions officerthat is a large number. What I can say is that there are many variations on a theme. During my time as a college counselor I told my students never to write about something they wouldnt have in an open conversation with a very close friends parent. Say your best friend is someone you have known for at least ten years; youve been over to the house, likely had sleepovers, have gotten to know the family fairly well. You might be open to sharing the stories of struggles, a recent breakup, that tough choice you had to make about cheatingbut then there are those things that might make you blush if you had to share it with them. I wont give examples herebut if think youll blush when telling your very close friends parent then youll probably not present it in a very eloquent in an essay that wont make an admissions officer feel uncomfortable. And remember it is about the presen tation of the topic more than the topic itself. VT: What is the biggest mistake a student can make on a college application? Densil: Lying. Dont falsify information, dont add puffery to your presentation of self and dont write what you think the school wants to read. Be yourself, express your essence and do all of that respectfully. VT: What is the typical process an admissions officer goes through to evaluate applications? Densil: Every school is different but the core of the application evaluation process is trying to get a deeper sense of the student through the students written presentation of self, through any extra evaluative support from teachers or college counselors and looking at any numerical information that gives a sense of potential success in the classroom. VT: What do you think is the single most important thing a student should make sure they present in the best possible way on their application? Densil: Everything. A student should present everything in the best possible way being their most authentic self. VT: How should students go about determining the culture of a university, and whether they would be a good fit? Densil: We live in an age where so many students do their research about schools by visiting websites and listening to friendsthese are okay outlets but ultimately spending time on a campus really gives a student the sense of a community. Being able to engage with members of the community genuinely give a sense of what a prospective student can expect. A campus is made up of a variety of personalities and that sense of culture requires an experiential understanding. VT: Early-action, early-decision, binding/non-binding, regular decisions...With so many choices when applying, what do you recommend to students? Densil: Dont try to game the system. Do your research and make an informed decision. ED is bindingbe sure that is where you want to be and can afford to be. EA is not binding, but be sure that at the moment you submit that application you believe your application is the strongest it can be and that it wont change if you applied at a later time. Ask an admission professional at the school at which you are interested about statics in relation to acceptance rates, ask about that specific schools philosophy in relation to the different application options. Every school is different and being informed is most important. VT: How important are grades and standardized test scores when admissions decisions are being made? Densil: This is school specific as some schools dont require standardized test scores and some schools may not request transcripts until much later in the process of application review. A student needs to understand one thing: your numerical portfolio does reflect if and how you might be successful in the classroom at a college or university. If a student feels a need to contextualize their numerical portfolio because it doesnt fully reflect who they are as a student in the classroom then they need to share that information with an admissions office. If there is a learning difference present then an admissions needs to know that so as best to contextualize and application. If a student suffered from a physical illness keeping them from engaging in classroom, stresses at home, family obligations, work responsibilitiesall of these things may impact the numerical portfolio for a student and an admissions person doesnt know unless a student explains the situation. VT: What tips do you have for students asking their teachers for letters of recommendation? Densil: Ask early. Dont wait until a week before the deadline to request a letteryou will get a rushed letter. Dont just ask the teacher in the class where you got an Athat teacher may have very little to say about you. Find a teacher that likes youwe are human and we dont get along with everyonejust because you have an A in this particular class doesnt mean you get along the best with that teacher. Dont be afraid to consider a teacher where you have a lower gradeif it is a class where you working really hard and giving 110% that teacher will likely speak best to you dedication to an academic topic. Dont wait until the last minute you will get a rushed letter; ask earlyoh, did I say that already? The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.

How to Teach Students with Dyspraxia

How to Teach Students with Dyspraxia What Makes a Good Teacher for Dyspraxic Students? ChaptersRecognising Students with DyspraxiaHow to Behave with Dyspraxic StudentsHelping Dyspraxic Students as a TeacherPreparing Students with Dyspraxia for the FutureIn the grand scheme of things, neurological problems are actually quite common in both children and adults. In fact, many students have learning difficulties, cognitive problems, or even mental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which can make it harder for them to learn.Dyscalculia, dysphasia, dysorthographia, dyslexia, etc., are all learning difficulties that we don’t know instinctively how to deal with as teachers. The same is true for dyspraxia. Around 14.4% of children in England have special educational needs. So how can you help a student with dyspraxia? In this article, we're going to have a look at what dyspraxia (or developmental coordination disorder) is, how it affects students, and how you, as a teacher, can help them to succeed!find these tips useful in working with dyslexic studen ts...While the child will have special educational needs, they don't have any learning disabilities. This means that they can learn just as quickly as any other student, as long as the teaching strategies take into account that their intelligence is that of any other student, but they will probably struggle with certain physical tasks that involve perception, movement, motor planning, or sequencing sounds within a word, for example. When dyspraxia causes speech and language impairments, it is known as developmental verbal dyspraxia and is usually managed with speech-language pathologists.  This support should be provided by the teacher throughout their classes. In addition to the traditional teaching they’re providing, the teacher may also need to be a makeshift psy-motor therapist from time to time. How to Behave with Dyspraxic StudentsAs a teacher, you need to know how to adapt, especially when students have special educational needs. In fact, teaching a dyspraxic student isn’t like teaching your typical class. This is because the student struggles with certain motor skills such as writing, which can negatively affect their self-confidence.For a teacher, teaching students with dyspraxia is an opportunity to develop. (Source: rawpixel)That’s why their teacher needs to also act as their coach, show them that they can do it, and that despite their impaired motor skills, they’re just as smart, if not smarter, than any other student... much as students on the autism spectrum are. After all, that’s what dyspraxia or development coordination disorder is, a disorder that affects motor skills rather than their intellect. While they may need more time to complete certain tasks, they don’t necessarily need more time to assimilate new concepts.Academic difficulties don’t occur at random. A teacher needs to ensure that their students have all the tools they need to succeed, learn, and develop as students. If the teacher suspects a child of having dyspraxia, i t’s certainly worth bringing up as they may need to be tested, which will help parents, family, friends, and teachers to better help them in their daily lives.Helping Dyspraxic Students as a TeacherA teacher’s role is to both educate and support their students by doing anything they can to help the student to succeed. In spite of learning difficulties, hyperactivity, or neurological disorders, every student should find classes simple and accessible. It’s essential that teachers see all students as equals.A dyspraxic student is as willing to learn as any other student. (Source: Free-Photos)So how can you help students with dyspraxia? You need to help them in the same way you’d help any other student. You need to focus on giving them the tools to get the most out of their schooling and the most out of your lessons. You’ll need to regularly monitor their progress, provide their parents with updates, and regularly liaise with the appropriate members of staff at the school.Teach ing children with dyspraxia shouldn’t be seen as your cross to bear. You just need to measure their progress as you would with any other student, ensure that they’re improving, and support them when they struggle with certain topics and aspects of your subject. After all, being a teacher is all about focusing on your students’ success!Think about how you help your students to succeed by helping them gain confidence and improving their self-esteem. You need to adapt your behaviour so that the child doesn’t think that they’re any better or worse than anyone else in their class, that they have exactly the same opportunities and abilities as their classmates, even if they can’t necessarily write as well as them, for example. You might find that dyspraxic students need the same type of learning environment as other SEN students...Preparing Students with Dyspraxia for the FutureWhether or not a child has dyspraxia or not, they probably don’t often think about their own future s. Of course, as a teacher, your main goal is to provide every student with the knowledge and abilities to help them succeed in whatever they decide to do with their lives in the future, regardless of whether they struggle with writing, for example.Dyspraxia is one of many challenges that school children can face. (Source: Free-Photos)Success hinges greatly on our own self-image and how we see ourselves. The teacher needs to make a dyspraxic student aware that, while their dyspraxia will make certain tasks more difficult for them, it’s not the end of the world and there are so many things that they’ll be more than capable of doing. There’s nothing stopping a student with dyspraxia from improving and succeeded. The teacher needs to encourage them to play an active role in their lessons and their success. They can provide guidance and support, two of the best weapons in any teachers arsenal. The student needs to be made aware of all the potentials avenues they can pursue in terms of what they want to do and what they’re good at. Once they start to realise what they want out of their future, it’ll make getting it seem far easier, especially when they know what they have to do in order to achieve their ambitions. Of course, this is true for any student, not just those with dyspraxia.Projects can help students gain a better idea of the future as they’ll have to plan for future events and they’ll see their plans play out. Without treating them any differently to the other students in the class, they need to see that everyone can get ahead in life.So there you have it! By being a dedicated teacher, communicating with your students, and making them aware of their potential and their future, you can help dyspraxic students. In short, anyone can succeed regardless of any condition that may affect them when they’re given the right tools, resources, and support. It's also worthwhile noting that it's quite common for those with dyspraxia to also have other con ditions such as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), autism spectrum disorder, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyslexia, hypotonia (low muscle tone), sensory processing disorder, specific language impairment, or visual perception deficits.Join the conversation: what are the best methods for working with learning-disabled students?
